Around the table with Cantine Laszlo
Cooking, styling, objects and the art of hosting: an encounter around what makes a table and the stories built around it.
Creating with what's there
“I always build my tables in harmony with the season, the place and what I have on hand. I could never imagine a table outside of its context.”
For Laszlo, everything starts with what's already there. A season, a place, a colour, a material or a piece of tableware sets the tone.
“My cooking, like my styling, aims to be sincere, natural, and an extension of what already exists.”
The table, at the heart of the home
“To me, the table is one of the most important pieces of furniture in a home. It's where a family gathers, where a couple shares everyday life, where you draw, wrap gifts, prepare vegetables, set down a bunch of flowers or a stack of mail. It's a piece of furniture that accompanies a whole life and gets passed down.”
Objects and their stories
Laszlo has a particular fondness for antique objects, “already steeped in history”, which she freely blends with more contemporary pieces.
“Tableware tells the story of the host, the cook, and the memories that will be built around it.”
Laszlo × Jars
The encounter with Jars dates back to the early days of Cantine Laszlo.
“You offered me the chance to choose a piece, and I went for a large oval dish in the Réfectoire style. That dish very quickly became one of the ones I use the most.”
“I've served cakes, salads, fresh pasta, fish on it…”
Several years on, Réfectoire remains the collection she comes back to spontaneously, in both the sand and glossy finishes.
“It's the one I've been collecting for several years now.”
An evening at Les Hirondelles
During a stay in Normandy at her friend Katie Brown's, Les Hirondelles, Cantine Laszlo imagined a dinner at the heart of the farm.
From the morning market to cooking over the brazier, the day ends around a table set amid the wildflowers. A raw, almost timeless setting, where Jars pieces mingle with the materials and objects of Les Hirondelles.
A moment of closeness and sharing, in the evening light.
